Symposium at the 11th European Congress of Analytic Philosophy (Vienna, Austria)

Several members of the project participated in the 11th European Congress of Analytic Philosophy (ECAP11) held at the University of Vienna from August 21 to 25, 2023. They presented a symposium titled "A Semantic Problem of Divine Names." The project members involved were Naomi Osorio-Kupferblum, Mirco Sambrotta, Daniela Vacek, and Martin Vacek. Additionally, Jozef Sábo, an external expert, also contributed to the symposium. The talks explored various facets of divine names, covering topics such as the structured systems underlying divine names and the conceptual challenges posed by them. In particular, Naomi Osorio-Kupferblum advocated for an ontologically neutral account of aboutness, in her talk titled "What Divine Names Are About." Mirco Sambrotta proposed an expressivist approch to modal claims involving divine names, in his presentation titled "The Necessity of God's Existence: Divine Names and Modality." Daniela Vacek presented the main findings of her paper "God is a Concept: A Semantic Problem of Divine Names"; the paper is co- authored with project members Marie Duží and Miloš Kosterec, and aims to motivate a hyperintensional analysis of divine names. Martin Vacek, in his presentation "The Vacuity of the Notion of God," discussed some of the challenges and complexities arising from divine names in the context of possible (and impossible) world semantics. Finally, in his talk "God is a Rule: Divine Names and System of Rules" Jozef Sábo viewed religions as structured systems of rules and divine names as the rules of validating them.
